Head coach Ivan ‘Cash’ van Rooyen and the Lions are in talks over his new contract, which is reportedly financially more lucrative than John Dobson’s at the DHL Stormers.
According to IOL Sport, Lions rugby chiefs have moved to extend Van Rooyen’s stay at Ellis Park by another two years.
This, despite the former strength and conditioning coach having a 39% win rate since being appointed head coach of The Pride in 2019.

It is believed that should Van Rooyen put pen to paper, he will earn more than Dobson – SA Rugby’s 2022 Coach of the Year after a magnificent season that included winning the inaugural Vodacom United Rugby Championship.
Van Rooyen, whose current deal is set to end in October, confirmed to IOL Sport that negotiations are currently under way and are expected to be concluded within the “next week or so”.

“The terms and conditions says two years, but we’re still busy with the process … once I sign the deal, I will be able to comment,” said the 40-year-old, who has been with the Lions since 2009. “I haven’t signed anything yet.”
With six matches remaining in their league schedule, the Lions are 12th in the URC with a 5-7 record.
