Craven Week Hero of the Day (Day 1)

Mfundo Ndlovu's individual effort with his team down to 14 men made him the Hero of the Day on the opening day of the U18 Coca-Cola Craven Week, writes BRENTON CHELIN in Middelburg.

With the Pumas trailing Western Province 30-8 and having played for 15 minutes with a man down, it was a moment of magic from the Hoërskool Standerton student that was the catalyst for an incredible fightback. He received the ball on the right wing before outstripping the Province defence to score in the corner as the hosts ended the first half on a high.

The Pumas came out fighting after half-time and they were much the better side in the second stanza. Ultimately, it was not to be, though, as they fell agonisingly short despite a try in the final move of the match.

Despite this, Ndlovu's contribution was duly noted and SARugbymag.co.za caught up with him after the match.

'We knew we had to put in a good performance for the fans,' said Ndlovu. 'We have been preparing really hard for this first match, it was a big one for us. I put the try down to teamwork and our fighting attitude, which we showed in the second half. We're excited to get back out on the field again and show what we can do.'
