On 10 August 2002, Piet van Zyl made his way onto the field to tackle referee David McHugh during a Tri-Nations Test between the Springboks and All Blacks in Durban.
The pot-bellied pitch invader was upset by Irishman McHugh’s decisions during the Kings Park match and dragged him to the ground, dislocating the official’s shoulder in the process.
Bok flanker AJ Venter and All Blacks counterpart Richie McCaw were among the players who pulled Van Zyl away from McHugh, before touch judge Chris White took over the game.
The All Blacks went on to win the clash 30-23 and Van Zyl was given a lifetime ban by the SA Rugby from attending any matches controlled by the sporting body.
