Dobson: It’s game on!

John Dobson says the DHL Stormers are fired up by the prospect of travelling to Glasgow for the Vodacom URC quarter-final. DYLAN JACK reports.

The DHL Stormers secured fifth place on the Vodacom URC table with a sensational comeback victory over the Lions in Cape Town on Saturday night.

With the Vodacom Bulls and Munster also winning on Saturday, the Stormers will travel to take on the fourth-placed Glasgow Warriors in next weekend’s quarter-finals.

It will be the first time that the Stormers go on the road for a URC playoff, which Dobson said is an important step in his team’s growth.

“It doesn’t really sell with my bosses for me to say that it’s a good thing we are playing away,” Dobson explained.

“We’ve played every playoff here at DHL Stadium. We said at the start of the season, one of the big things for us was how we play away.

“We’ve gone from nought from four on tour, to a really good performance in Leicester with a so-called B-team, a win in Paris, a friendly win in Northampton and then two wins on tour.

“This is the next step in our growth. I would have loved to have it here, for the people for the money and the chances of winning. But it’s not a bad thing for our growth to have it away.”

The Stormers last played in Glasgow in round three this season, during their four-match tour without a host of their Springboks.

Glasgow claimed a 20-9 victory, but Dobson said the URC playoff would be a different matter.

“I would really be excited to go to Scotstoun in May, compared to November without our Springboks.

“We are up for this. I promise you, we are not going for one week now. If we can play in the afternoon at Scotstoun, it’s game on.”
