Eddie Jones has been confirmed as the new head coach of Japan on a deal that will see him in charge until the end of the next World Cup in 2027.
Jones’ return to the position he held between 2012 and 2015 was formally ratified by the Japan Rugby Football Union during a board meeting on Wednesday night.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Jones will be announced and presented as Jamie Joseph’s replacement in a press conference in Tokyo on Thursday.
Under Joseph, Japan reached their first-ever World Cup quarter-finals during their home World Cup in 2019, but could not escape their pool four years later.
The announcement comes less than two months after Rugby Australia accepted Jones’ resignation, following a disastrous second stint as Wallabies head coach, which included a historic 2023 World Cup group stage exit in France. He was contracted to take the Wallabies to the home 2027 World Cup.
Jones’ first stint as Japan coach included the nation’s most famous victory, a 34-32 World Cup upset victory against the Springboks in England in 2015.
