Editor’s picks: Top weekend content

Although there was no live action over the weekend, there was still plenty of compelling rugby content. Editor CRAIG LEWIS picks five top pieces to catch up on.

1 SA Rugby boss: We are united in crisis response

With rugby effectively shut down for some time due to the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of us have been waiting to hear how SA Rugby has been tackling the issue. Late on Friday, a statement was to make the following assurances:

  • Players, staff, administrators, teams are aligning on next steps
  • Industry united in crisis response
  • Contingencies planned for all scenarios
  • ‘We will get through this’ message communicated to stakeholders

2 Senatla: I won’t give up on Bok dream

In the second episode of our series ‘Winging it with Seabelo Senatla’, the Stormers star talks about his upbringing, journey into sevens and why he remains determined to keep challenging himself in the 15-man game.

Keep an eye out for our third instalment of this segment (coming soon), where Senatla gets out of his comfort zone and tests himself with a cooking lesson in the kitchen.

3 ‘I was locked in a strange energy for years’

One of our most popular content pieces recently has been a fascinating interview from the latest issue of SA Rugby magazine, where former Springbok star Joe van Niekerk chats about life after rugby, but also opens up on some of the challenges he endured as a young professional who suddenly had to contend with fame and fortune.

He looks back on his career with no regrets regardless of any perception that he never fulfilled his potential, and also touches on some of the ‘gossip’ that caused him a lot of stress while playing for Western Province.

4 Bok RWC final squad: Then and now

Another post that has drawn quite a lot of interest has been our look back at some of the old photos of our World Cup-winning Springboks.

5 Our Springbok 23: The final squads

This past weekend also brought the end of our series on the best Springbok team from the past 25 years.

Each writer from the SA Rugby magazine took the opportunity to turn into selectors and pick their Bok ‘dream team’.

Let us know which team you like the look of most?
