Former Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards has given Wayne Pivac’s men a chance of defeating the Springboks when the two sides clash in Pretoria on Saturday.
The first of three Tests in SA between the Boks and Wales kicks off with the visitors never having beaten the world champions in South Africa in 10 previous attempts.
In the most recent match between the Boks and Wales in Cardiff, the South Africans edged the Welsh 23-18.
Edwards, now the defence coach for Six Nations champions France, has backed his fellow countrymen to upset their hosts at Loftus Versfeld.
“It will be the ultimate challenge against the world champions at altitude,” he wrote in his Daily Mail column.
“The South African clubs have been playing really well but if Wales play to the level they did against France during the Six Nations and front up to the huge scrummaging challenge, then they have a chance.
“It will also be great to see George North getting the ball in his hands after his long spell on the sidelines.”
