Pumas captain Willie Engelbrecht insists that his team remain a force to be reckoned with in the Currie Cup, despite a pre-season player exodus.
The Nelspruit outfit suffered their third successive defeat of the competition on Friday, a 24-10 loss to the table-topping Sharks.
Prior to the 2022 campaign, the Pumas lost more than 10 players – including former skipper Pieter Jansen van Vuren – from the side that came within a late penalty of qualifying for last season’s Currie Cup semi-finals.
Coach Jimmy Stonehouse may already have one eye on rebuilding his squad for next season, but Engelbrecht still hasn’t lost sight of the prize this term.
“I still believe we have an excellent team with very tough players. We didn’t actually lose too many senior players [pre-season],” he said.
“We have a strong team to compete; we just need to start finishing off our moves, competing at set pieces, and then we’ll start doing well.”
