Etzebeth’s French club, Toulon, confirmed in a statement that the injury occurred during training last week and that the big second rower has since undergone surgery.

Though Toulon have not given an exact indication of when Etzebeth is expected to return to fitness, it is thought that the injury will keep him out for ‘several weeks’.

First estimations suggested the lock would only be out for four weeks, but it is now felt that it could be significantly longer than that.

Etzebeth’s injury will not come as welcome news to Springbok coaches Rassie Erasmus and Jacques Nienaber. He joins RG Snyman and Lood de Jager on a growing list of injuries in the pack.
