The stage is set for a number of epic clashes on day two of the Wildeklawer festival in Kimberly on Saturday, writes THEO GARRUN.
Grey College will be meeting Paarl Gimnasium, and Paarl Boys’ High take on Affies in match-ups between the teams that were most impressive in their first outings on Thursday, and when the dust settles on Saturday night, we will have a pretty good idea of who the top dogs in schools rugby are going to be this year.
The Paarl Gim and Grey College games were both stopped short on Thursday. Paarl Gim were 73-7 ahead of Transvalia when the game was called five minutes from time, and the Grey vs Outeniqua game was stopped when Grey got to 64-7 with 10 minutes still to go.
Paarl Boys’ High were very impressive in downing Glenwood 55-7, while Affies finished strongly against a very game HTS Drostdy side, winning 38-22.
Monument beat Boland Landbou 42-33 in an entertaining clash. They had Boland on their knees early in the game, but the Cape side fought back in the last minutes of the second half to close the gap to 14-12 at the break.
Monnas then stormed ahead early in the second half, only to see Boland come back strongly again, holding them to a nine-point winning margin in the end.
Monument centre Henco van Wyk was their star. He scored three tries in the game – one of three players to get hat-tricks on the day. The others were Curwin Gertse of Paarl Gim, who actually scored four tries against Transvalia, and Affies No 8 George Oosthuizen, who scored three in their win over Drostdy.
