Grey sweep Maritzburg aside

Grey College secured a resounding 46-20 win over Maritzburg College in their Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools clash.

On the back of a shock defeat to Grey High, the No 1-ranked team delivered a ruthless display of attacking rugby, outscoring Maritzburg six tries to three.

Outside centres Julian Jordaan and Marcel Coetsee exchanged penalties in an evenly contested first 15 minutes. The visitors then started to dominate possession and when fullback Mathew Kriel stepped past a number of Grey defenders, they could well have hit the front. But prop Masikane Mazwi didn't collect Kriel's offload, sparking a Grey counter. Running from their own 5m line, wing Jacques Grobler was on end to dot down in the corner for the hosts. Moments later flank Henry Slabbert grabbed Grey's second, with Jordaan adding the extras for a 15-point half-time lead.

A converted score from Grey prop Callie Janse van Vuuren increased his team's advantage early in the second stanza. Maritzburg replied with two touchdowns from Mazwi and captain Daryn Goodson, reducing the deficit to 10.

Their forwards started to dominate the breakdown area, while Kriel caused Grey's defence all sorts of trouble at the back. He again beat several defenders down the right flank, but in a repeat of the first half, the pass to Mazwi didn't go to hand. Maritzburg played with a new found vigour and also began to win the territorial battle.

But any hopes of a comeback was imminently despatched, with tries from Henry Immelman and Tabo Maree, before Janse van Vuuren grabbed his second. The bulky Jordaan slotted all three conversions.

Maritzburg's Renard le Roux wriggled his way over the line for a late consolation try.
