Durban-raised Mpilo Gumede says he felt that a change of environment was needed when deciding to join the Vodacom Bulls from the Sharks.
Gumede joined the Vodacom Bulls ahead of the 2023-24 season from the Sharks, where he had spent the entirety of his career, having grown up in Durban and attended Durban High School.

The 23-year-old made his debut for his new team in the recent win over Cardiff, but his first outing was cut short due to an ankle injury.
During a press conference, Gumede explained why he decided to leave his hometown for a new adventure in Pretoria.
“I’ve been in Durban for my entire life and I thought a change would be good for me,” Gumede said. “I’ve adjusted some things a bit but overall it has been amazing. I’m happy.
“I have settled in better than expected. Very good culture, a very good group and they are very welcoming.
“It actually doesn’t feel like I just joined the team.
“On and off the field, the standards are really high and it’s a very good working environment.”
Gumede made his senior debut for the Sharks in 2020, but struggled to cement a regular place in their Vodacom URC side, earning just two caps since 2021.
He said that while he has had to switch his style up slightly to suit the Vodacom Bulls, he has recieved encouragement from Jake White to go out and play his natural game.
“In our chats, White told me I’m free to express myself and should not overthink or panic regarding the team’s style of play,” Gumede explained.
The Vodacom Bulls conclude their Vodacom URC tour against Edinburgh on Friday and Gumede is still hopeful of taking part in the match.
“The swelling has come down. It is not that bad and hopefully, I can train by Thursday,” he said.
