Maro Itoje could be set to leave England after reportedly being asked to more than halve his R18 million a year salary to stay with Saracens.
According to the Telegraph, changes to the Premiership’s salary cap have forced Saracens to choose between Itoje and England captain Owen Farrell as one of their “marquee” players.
Saracens reportedly prefer the flyhalf to receive a mega-contract and have asked Itoje – one of the league’s highest-earning players on a reported £800,000 a year (R18 million) – to take more than a 50% pay reduction, which has left him unhappy.

Farrell’s contract also expires at the end of the season, but a new deal as a marquee player would allow him to be paid outside the salary cap.
The 29-year-old Itoje is said to be considering his options and could be heading to France, with Top 14 clubs put on alert by the news of his potential availability.
Itoje is in the final season of his contract and the 82-Test star won’t be able to be picked for England if he goes to France due to RFU regulations.
