Ellis Park is no longer a suitable venue for the Lions and they should be rehomed, according to SARugbymag.co.za readers.
Polled on whether the Lions should relocate to a new stadium as attendance declines and safety concerns mount at Ellis Park, a resounding 86% of readers believe it’s time for a change.
Though many argue the stadium still offers a great rugby experience, very few are willing to risk becoming a victim of crime while travelling to and from the stadium.
COLUMN: Ellis Park’s days are numbered
Opened in 1928, Ellis Park has a rich history that includes hosting the Boks’ famous 1995 Rugby World Cup victory over the All Blacks, but with only 2,500 people attending matches, as was the case in the Lions’ Challenge Cup match against Newcastle, in a stadium that has a capacity of 62,567, the once great stadium is on its way to becoming a white elephant.
