Ruan Dreyer will miss Saturday’s Jukskei derby in the Vodacom URC and start of the Currie Cup following his act of foul play during the match against Glasgow Warriors.
He was shown a red card by referee Adam Jones for a dangerous cleanout on Glasgow replacement Thomas Gordon in the 65th minute of the bonus-point win for the Lions in Johannesburg last week.
An independent disciplinary committee comprising Tommy Dalton (Ireland), Gordon Black (Ireland) and Nigel Williams (Wales) accepted Dreyer’s admission that he had committed an act of foul play which warranted a red card.

“The panel found that the incident met the red card threshold, with entry of mid-range warranting six weeks. [Dreyer] received 50% mitigation due to the player’s exemplary discipline record, no injury to the Glasgow Warriors player and his conduct through the hearing,” read an official URC statement.
Dreyer’s suspension will be reduced by one week should he participate in and complete the World Rugby coaching intervention programme.
As it stands, the 32-year-old prop is unavailable for this week’s URC clash between the Vodacom Bulls and Lions in Pretoria, as well as matches against Western Province (11 March) and Pumas (17 March) in the 2023 Currie Cup.
