Am called up to Bok squad

Lukhanyo Am has been called up to the Springbok squad to replace injured winger Makazole Mapimpi at the World Cup in France.

Mapimpi fractured a cheekbone in South Africa’s win over Tonga on Sunday and has been ruled out for four to six weeks.

Am will join the squad in Toulon this week, having recovered from a knee injury suffered in the 24-13 victory win over Argentina in Buenos Aires on 5 August.

The 29-year-old centre is the second injury replacement to the 33-man squad following the call-up of flyhalf Handre Pollard for hooker Malcolm Marx. Pollard made a successful return to the team against Tonga.

The Boks will qualify for the quarter-finals if Ireland beat third-placed Scotland next Saturday, though the permutations are more complex if the Scots beat the Irish.
