The latest edition of SA Rugby magazine features Lukhanyo Am as the Springboks’ most indispensable backline player going into the 2023 World Cup.
Am made his Springbok debut in the final Test of 2017 and in his 15th Test appearance, the Springboks won the 2019 World Cup, where he set up their first-ever try in a final.
He has since scalped the British & Irish Lions and will head to France as South Africa’s most indispensable back, with few as capable of locking his channel on defence, while presenting a breakdown threat and keeping defenders on their toes.
Ruan Pienaar is another exceptionally talented playmaker and the 88-Test veteran was key to the Cheetahs’ Currie Cup run, where the motley crew from Bloemfontein won the title for the first time since 2019.
The Free State has given rise to a number of incredible careers and it’s no surprise that Grey College are the team to beat as the South African schools season continues to unfold.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, future All Blacks boss Scott Robertson signed off as Crusaders coach by once again clinching the Super Rugby Pacific trophy after a controversial victory against World Cup hopeful Damian McKenzie and the Chiefs.
