DHL Stormers fans were asked to pick the best jersey in team history, and they eventually settled on the iconic Men in Black strip.
It was an extremely tight race against the Western Stormers kit of 1998, but the Cape side’s famous black jersey of the following season was voted the all-time fan favourite in the first edition of SARugbymag’s Best Jersey poll series.
The 1999 Men in Black were led by fearless captain Bobby Skinstad and featured Cape royalty in Breyton Paulse, Percy Montgomery and Corne Krige, to name a few.
DOBSON: Stormers targeting derby liftoff
They opened the 1999 Super 12 campaign with two wins followed by two losses before going on a six-match unbeaten run that came to an end with a disappointing defeat to the Cats in their final round-robin match.
A semi-final date with the Highlanders was set after the Stormers finished second on the overall log behind the Reds, but it was a fixture that ended in heartbreak as the Men in Black suffered a crushing 33-18 defeat at Newlands.
Although the ultimate dream never became reality, the ’99 side dazzled Newlands crowds in their slick black jerseys and forever etched their names in the annals of Stormers history.
