Former wing Ray Mordt is eager to see the Springboks employ the best attack coach to give the world champions a new cutting edge at the World Cup.
The Springboks have fewer than 200 days until they kick off their World Cup title defence on 10 September against Scotland.
Jacques Nienaber has had a squad of 14 players in a training camp in Cape Town for the past couple of weeks, as preparations have begun for the 2023 Test season.
Nienaber has a combined win rate of 60% for the 2021 and 2022 seasons and has done that while expanding the pool of players that he can select from for the World Cup.
However, in an interview with TimesLive, Mordt, who played 18 Tests from 1980 to 1984, said the Springboks could benefit from the addition of an attacking specialist to their coaching staff.
“I would like to see so much more emphasis from the Springboks on attack,” Mordt told TimesLIVE.
“I would look for the best attack coach around because teams have realised that if they can hold our scrums, stop our mauls, handle our rush defence and take the high kicks, they can nullify our strengths and beat us.
“You’ve got to have Plan A and B and know when to implement them on the field. The Boks showed on the end-of-year tour that they can change their playing style and employ the other game.”
