RG Snyman continued to show signs that he is getting back to his best after the Springbok lock produced a towering performance to help Munster stun the DHL Stormers in Cape Town on Saturday night. DYLAN JACK reports.
In his first Vodacom United Rugby Championship start of the season, Snyman was imperious on defence and attack, getting heavily involved in poaching lineouts and producing magnificent offloads as Munster became the first team to win at Cape Town Stadium since December 2021.
REPORT: Munster end Stormers’ home run
The World Cup winner has endured a torrid time of successive knee ligament injuries since joining Munster, but since returning has started to pick up his form.
“That was his first start for us in the URC, for a significant period. His performance was huge,” said Munster head coach Graham Rowntree after the match.
“He was constantly involved on both sides of the ball. Of course, he is a huge presence in the set piece and the maul, on both sides of the ball.
“I am delighted for RG. He has had a tricky time, which has been well-documented. He has been great with the group. He is part of our leadership group. The lads really respect and have taken to him.”
Stormers captain Steven Kitshoff added that Snyman frustrated the hosts with his constant in-your-face style of play.
“He is just a quality player. He is getting his game fitness and confidence back that we were used to back in 2019,” Kitshoff said.
“I am chuffed for RG. I think he is really knocking hard onto getting a possible recall in the Springbok side.
“He was irritating today,” Kitshoff added with a smirk. “He is my mate, but today, I didn’t like him a lot.”
