Paper Talk: Bulls want White as DoR

Published on March 8, 2020

A round up of what some of South Africa’s leading Sunday papers are saying, including a look at who the Vodacom Bulls are targeting as their new director of rugby.

The major rugby story in Rapport looks at who the Bulls could bring in to replace Alan Zondagh as director of rugby after his resignation from the post earlier this year. According to writers Brenden Nel and Hendrik Cronje, the Blue Bulls Rugby Company will start talks with former Springbok coach Jake White on Monday. White has reportedly already put feelers out on which Bulls players will be available for the franchise in the future. His appointment would not influence coach Pote Human’s position, despite the Bulls’ poor start to the 2020 Vodacom Super Rugby season.

Staying with Rapport and it appears that Lions flank Cyle Brink could be the latest player to sign an overseas deal after links emerged between himself and the Leicester Tigers. According to the latest update, Brink is waiting for Lions chief executive Rudolf Straeuli to give him the go-ahead. Straeuli is in conversation with SA Rugby director of rugby Rassie Erasmus to see if Brink is still in consideration for a place in the Springbok squad this year.

Finally, Jean-Luc du Preez says he is targeting a return to the Springboks as a flank, despite making a move to lock for the Sale Sharks this season. Talking to Rapport, Du Preez said he had to make the positional switch as Sale had injuries at lock. However, with Lood de Jager having made his return from injury this weekend, Du Preez could shift back to his regular position at flank.
