Paul Roos overcome Affies

Paul Roos beat Affies 29-12 in their Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools match in Stellenbosch on Saturday.

The hosts took the lead through the boot of Joshua Vermeulen in the ninth minute, but Affies replied with two tries in the first half through Henco Jordaan and Eddie Fouché, who converted his five-pointer.

Paul Roos trailed 12-3 at the break, but surged ahead with three converted tries by Nico Leonard, Vermeulen and Jason Myburg to run out comfortable winners.

'The boys played very well,' Paul Roos coach Hein Kriek told SARugbymag.co.za. 'We managed to stop their momentum, be strong on defence, excel in the set pieces and take our chances. It was a great performance. We will use this as a launch pad for our season.'

Affies coach Jaco Koch says his squad failed to capitalise on the opportunities they had.

'In the second half we had an opportunity to score but we made a mistake and ended up behind our own tryline.

'During the first half we were clinical and closed down their space. In the second half we gave them too much space to move and a team like Paul Roos will punish you for that.'
