SA Rugby magazine’s February edition celebrated Damian Willemse as the man to unlock the Springbok backline with its first Afrikaans cover headline. What do you think?
Almost everything that Willemse laid his hands on in 2022 was a success or became better – and his reach exceeds his grasp on what is poised to be a career-shaping 2023 for the highly talented playmaker.
From fringe player to the guy around whom the Bok backline is chosen, he has become integral to Rassie Erasmus and Jacques Nienaber’s plans if the defending world champions want to dominate all-comers this year.
The 24-year-old is pushing the two most experienced Bok flyhalves, Handre Pollard and Elton Jantjies, for a starting position, while at franchise level he is a vital cog in the Stormers’ Vodacom United Rugby Championship title defence and in their maiden Champions Cup campaign.
Featuring at fullback, flyhalf and centre for the Boks and Stormers last year, Willemse impressed with his composure under pressure and his undeniable X factor, and his progression and maturity was highlighted throughout the Test season.
