SA playmaker completes URC move

Cardiff Rugby were delighted to announce the signing of a standout performer from the 2023 Currie Cup in what will be a significant boost to the Welsh club’s backline.

A leading figure for the Pumas during their victorious campaign in 2022, flyhalf Tinus de Beer has completed a deal to join the Vodacom United Rugby Championship outfit from next season.

The 27-year-old pivot was the top-scorer (126) in last season’s Currie Cup after playing a key role for the Lowvelders in their bid to defend their title, before losing to the Free State Cheetahs in the final.

His skills and experience made him an enticing prospect for Cardiff, and the former Junior Springbok is relishing the opportunity to bolster their playmaking options.

“I am extremely grateful to be here. It is a great club with great history and great culture. It is a club that strives on playing attractive rugby and a club that is ultimately looking to win games,” De Beer told Cardiff’s official website.

“You think of all the players who have been here, that tells its story. I have watched a lot of Cardiff games and everyone knows Cardiff Arms Park next to Principality Stadium.

“There are a lot of guys like Josh Navidi, who has just retired, Sam Warburton and even Jonah Lomu, that’s just three names from a big bunch of players so it is exciting to be here.

“Firstly I just want to get going with the boys and to buy into a system that works here at the moment. I am here to play rugby, I’m not here for a vacation or to prove anyone wrong or right, I am here to work hard with the boys.

“In the URC I would love to make the playoffs so [long-term], keeping that in mind and working hard towards that goal.”
