SARugbymag.co.za readers believe South African teams should target success in both the Vodacom United Rugby Championship and European cup competitions.
Almost half of respondents (44%) to a site poll said they would go flat out to win both competitions if they were at the helm of one of the SA teams. It was notable from the votes that fans rate the URC as a more attainable goal as 31% opted to make that competition the priority, while 25% favoured chasing the Champions or Challenge Cup title at the expense of the URC campaign.
Euro Cup picks: Bulls, Sharks to fly SA flag
With the Stormers second on the URC log and fifth in their Pool B Champions Cup standings, the Bulls third on the URC log and seventh in their Pool A Champions Cup standings and the Sharks placed ninth in the URC but fourth in the Champions Cup Pool A, all the SA teams, with the exception of the Lions, look set to head into the knockout stages of both competitions, which explains why the majority of voters would target both tournaments.
If a team were to only target the URC, the Vodacom Bulls would be the best fit as they have the strongest URC ranking compared to their Champions Cup standing. With only six rounds of URC left and third on the log, they look certain of making the Final 8, whereas qualification for the Champions Cup round of 16 will not come as easy given they’re ranked seventh with two games to play.
