Saffas Abroad: Wiese, Augustus impressive in Premiership

It was quite an event for South African eighthmen as Jasper Wiese and Juarno Augustus helped their respective teams to big wins in round 10 of the Premiership this past weekend.

– Wiese started in an all-South African back row as Leicester Tigers fought hard to claim a vital 16-14 victory over defending champions Harlequins, to extend their lead at the top of the table to nine points.

The Springbok loose forward played 55 minutes and completed all four of his tackle attempts, while also making 10 carries and beating two defenders.

Another Springbok flank, Marco van Staden, played the full 80 minutes and missed just one of his 10 tackle attempts, winning one turnover and beating three defenders. Hanro Liebenberg was replaced just after half time, but still made seven tackles and won three lineouts.

Tyrone Green, playing at fullback, was Harlequins’ most effective attacking player. The 23-year-old ran a massive 158 metres – the most of any player in the match – while he also made two linebreaks, beat two defenders and made two offloads.

Also playing for Harlequins, was Springbok centre Andre Esterhuizen and lock Stephan Lewies, while tighthead prop Simon Kerrod was a replacement.

– Augustus scored his first two tries for Northampton as they handed bottom-dwellers Bath a 40-19 thrashing on Saturday.

The former Stormers player grabbed his two tries in quick succession in the first half in a very good performance. Augustus made 51m from eight carries, 17 tackles, won a turnover and beat two defenders.

Also grabbing a brace of tries for the Saints was wing Courtnall Skosan, who made four clean breaks and ran 69m.

– Springbok tighthead prop Vincent Koch continued his impressive form, despite Saracens suffering an 18-15 loss to Exeter Chiefs.

Koch played the full 80 minutes and dominated the scrum battle, while he made 14 tackles, carried four times and won a turnover.
