Paarl Boys High snatched a late victory against Durban High at the Wilderklawer Festival on Saturday, while Grey College and Affies set the scene for their epic encounter.

Paarl Boys High dodged a fourth defeat in a row by grabbing a tense 15-13 victory over Durban High on the third day of the Wildeklawer Festival in Kimberley.

A penalty from flyhalf Viaan Mentoor on the stroke of fulltime separated the teams after flyhalf Allston Cedras gave DHS a 13-12 lead going into the closing stages of the match.

This gave Paarl Boys a morale-boosting first win after three successive losses, ahead of their clash with Grey College on Saturday, 11 May.

Grey College finished the festival unbeaten and grabbed a fifth win on the trot by convincingly beating Pretoria’s Garsfontein 38-10 in the final game of the day.

Hooker Liam van Wyk scored a hat-trick of tries for Grey College, who will also take on an in-form Affies in the coming weeks on Saturday, 18 May.

Affies also went unbeaten through the festival, producing a late flurry of tries to claim a 32-10 victory over Oakdale, who were in the contest until the final 10 minutes.

Winger Hugo Snyman scored a brace for Affies, who will have a week’s break before hosting Grey College.

Meanwhile, Paul Roos stayed unbeaten with a ruthless 48-0 demolition of Maritzburg College, EG Jansen scored a late maul try to beat Stellenberg 19-17 and hosts Diamandtveld beat New Zealand’s St John’s 40-24.

Elsewhere in the country, Rondebosch Boys handed Wynberg a first defeat of the season by powering to a 49-27 victory, while Bishops suffered a fifth defeat in a row in their derby against SACS (29-7).
