Paarl Boys High and Paarl Gymnasium each claimed back-to-back wins at the Wildeklawer Festival, while Paul Roos closed the day with a thrilling victory over Affies on Monday evening.
The annual Wildeklawer Festival at Diamantveld High in Kimberley closed with an exhilarating north-south derby between Pretoria’s Affies and Stellenbosch’s Paul Roos.
Paul Roos had the better of the first half and took a 16-10 lead into the break thanks to a sniping try from scrumhalf Zeke January.
Affies were quickest out of the blocks in a tight second half, but a dramatic finish to the game ensued when Paul Roos were awarded a penalty try going into the final 10 minutes.
Affies had a player yellow-carded, but were still able to go 25-24 ahead after flyhalf Ruben Pienaar converted a penalty.
It was winger Keehan Henson who made himself the hero for Paul Roos, after being put over from an overlap from close range to snatch the victory.
Earlier in the day, Paarl Boys High beat Helpmekaar 15-10 and Paarl Gym won 19-5 against Monument as both Paarl schools finished the festival unbeaten.
Durban High, who were beaten by Paul Roos on Saturday, bounced back in style to hammer HTS Drostdy 66-17 after trailing 12-0.
Bloemfontein giants Grey College also finished the festival with two wins from two with a convincing display against Stellenberg resulting in a 33-8 victory.
