Schools: Grey weekend while Jo’burg rivals clash

Brother faces brother in Gqeberha on Saturday when Grey High and Grey College battle it out, while Jeppe will look to avenge their narrow loss to rivals KES in the Johannesburg derby.

The friendly city of Gqeberha will see two brother schools Grey High and Grey College face off in a Premier Interschools derby.

The rivalry between these two schools has been in existence since 1929. In the 52 games, Grey College have been dominant, winning 42, while there have been two draws.

Grey High, who have won eight of their 15 matches this season, will be on the hunt for a first win in the derby since 2014, when Curwin Bosch, Jeremy Ward and Junior Pokomela played for the 1st XV. However, they will find it tough against a Grey College juggernaut that is enjoying an unbeaten season.

Meanwhile, further north in the country, Jeppe will host KES in the return leg of the big Johannesburg schools derby. The two schools faced each other in April and KES came away with a 23-20 home victory.

Jeppe are coming off a 22-16 win at Pretoria Boys’ High, which followed a narrow 31-33 loss at home against Affies.

In other fixtures, Maritzburg College will look to build on their big win over Affies when they face Pretoria Boys, while Paarl Boys High will hope to bounce back from a loss to Boland Landbou when they welcome the kings of the southern suburbs Bishops to Paarl.
