The Sharks are taking a wait-and-see approach to announcing their new Currie Cup coaching staff until next season’s calendar is unveiled.
Currie Cup head coach Joey Mongalo was announced as the Sharks’ new defence coach under John Plumtree when the Sharks unveiled their coaching staff for the 2023-24 season.
Mongalo has taken the Sharks on a seven-game winning streak in 2023, which has seen the Durban side secure their place in the semi-finals.

However, while the coaches for the Vodacom United Rugby Championship were announced, it was not confirmed whether Mongalo and assistant coach JP Pietersen would still coach the Currie Cup team next season.
During a press conference on Wednesday morning, a spokesperson said that the Sharks would wait to see if the URC and Currie Cup will overlap next year, as it has done in 2023.
“We don’t have clarity yet on when the next Currie Cup season will start, so a decision hasn’t been made.
“We are not sure if the URC and the Currie Cup will overlap. The best decision will be made as soon as the format of the new tournament is known.”
While the Sharks have already got a home semi-final, they still need to secure a first-place finish as the Cheetahs are just two points behind on the log.
The Sharks take on Western Province in Cape Town in the final round of action on Saturday and will try to balance the need to give players a rest and go for the win.
“We are now going into the 14th round in the Currie Cup. It’s been a very long series. The majority of the guys played in all the games in the competition,” said Pietersen.
“The coaches about how we can rest our players so that they are rested and hungry. We are already assured a home semi-final. We have to have the lads fresh and sharp for our home semi and put all our energy into that game
“But added to that, we also have to win in Cape Town so that we can get a home final. We will make sure the squad is fresh and give ourselves the best possible chance to win on Saturday.”
