Small-Smith is currently based in Johannesburg as he undergoes rehabilitation for a concussion. The versatile back is expected to be out of action for the next three months.

Rumours have since circulated that, following his rehab, Small-Smith could join the Lions.

Although Small-Smith has conceded that he is in Johannesburg, he told OFM Sport he is contracted to the Cheetahs until the end of October next year.

‘I am currently doing my concussion rehab with Dr Patricios and his team in Johannesburg. The reason is that Dr Patricios is the leader in his field and will give me the best chance to return to the field as soon as possible.

‘The Cheetahs gave me the permission to do so [return to Johannesburg] as they have my best interests at heart and also believe he is the right man to help me. I am contracted to the Cheetahs until the end of October 2022 and will do all I can to represent them when I am fit and healthy to do so.’

The Cheetahs will be without the services of Small-Smith for the duration of the ‘Franchise Cup’. The first round kicks off this weekend when the men from Bloem will travel to Cape Town to face Western Province.
