Breakout DHL Stormers star Jurie Matthee has signed a new long-term contract with Western Province Rugby following a sensational start to his professional career.
Matthee’s agent, Michael Thomas, told Netwerk24 that the flyhalf has put pen to paper on a two-year contract to keep him in Cape Town until June 2026.
The 23-year-old has rapidly progressed through the senior ranks after being called up from Maties’ Varsity Cup team last year.
Matthee featured for DHL Western Province in the 2023 Currie Cup and ended the competition with a strong outing in a 44-5 win against the Sharks in Cape Town.
He was a surprise pick at No 10 in the Champions Cup opening round match against Leicester Tigers at Welford Road. However, up against fellow Paarl Gim graduate Handre Pollard, Matthee showed excellent temperament by slotting three conversions, two penalties and a drop goal.
With Manie Libbok expected to be absent due to Springbok resting protocol when the Stormers return to action, Matthee will provide backup at flyhalf, along with Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu.
