The Varsity Cup has officially announced that all fixtures scheduled for Monday, 16 March will be postponed to help contain the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
This follows the announcement from South African president Cyril Ramaphosa that gatherings of over 100 people are prohibited.
It was originally rumored that the Varsity Cup would go ahead behind closed doors, but with both Wits and UCT among the universities taking steps to contain the virus, it has become apparent that continuing with Monday’s games is no longer possible.
A statement from the Varsity Cup said that the tournament organisers would be meeting on Tuesday to detail the way forward.
‘All Varsity Cup fixtures for 16 March 2020 have been postponed,’ the statement read.
‘The Varsity Cup board will meet on Tuesday, 17 March where a decision on the rest of the tournament will be taken.’
