Springbok star Handre Pollard opens up on him not studying medicine, and how he realised playing professional rugby instead was never a choice but a calling.
Pollard was just 21 when he was promoted to Bok general at the 2015 World Cup. The flyhalf’s potential was on full display in England, where South Africa claimed bronze, and finished as the tournament’s second-highest point-scorer with 93.
It was in Japan in 2019 that Pollard came into his own, finishing on top of the charts with 69 points as the Boks claimed a record-equalling third title, and made a stunning return from injury at this year’s tournament as he looks to help defend their crown.
But, speaking in the latest episode of the SA Rugby series, ‘How rugby changed my life’, the 29-year-old shares his journey to the top tier of the sport, after he was first approached by former Junior Bok coach Dawie Theron as a school prodigy at Paarl Gimnasium.
