Poll: Who was the most surprising omission from Bok squad?

Warrick Gelant in action for the Springboks Warrick Gelant
Standard published on October 19, 2021

Following the Springbok squad announcement, vote for the players you think were unlucky to miss out on selection for the upcoming three-Test tour.

Boss Jacques Nienaber announced his 32-man squad for South Africa’s three-Test tour of Europe in November, and surprisingly only included two uncapped players in scrumhalf Grant Williams and lock Salmaan Moerat.

With a few regular squad members ruled out through injury, several other players were earmarked for inclusion in the touring party, but were unfortunately not called up.

On the home front, players like Elrigh Louw, Ruan Nortje, Cornal Hendricks and Madosh Tambe have all been in top form for the Vodacom Bulls in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship, while Lions flank Vincent Tshituka has been a standout in his team’s underperforming pack.

For the Stormers, fullback Warrick Gelant has been excellent since his long-awaited return from injury. He produced a man-of-the-match performance to inspire the Cape side to their maiden win in the URC this past Saturday.

Further afield, two of the names on everyone’s lips have been Tyrone Green and Andre Esterhuizen due to their superb form for Harlequins in the English Premiership.

With that in mind, who do you think are the two most unlucky players overlooked for the Boks’ end-of-year tour to Europe?

Which two players were the most unlucky to miss out on selection in the Springbok squad?
