World Rugby have announced that the Women’s Sevens Challenger Series in Stellenbosch has been postponed due to the coronavirus.

The series, which would have seen South Africa go up against teams from Argentina, Belgium, China, Colombia, Japan for a place as a core team on the Sevens circuit, was scheduled for 28-29 March.

However, following on from sporting tournaments across the globe, World Rugby have confirmed that the Challenger Series will be postponed to a later date.

‘The health and safety of participating teams, tournament event staff and spectators is our highest priority,’ the governing body said in a statement.

‘This proactive decision has been taken to help protect the global rugby community and the wider public and was taken based on the World Health Organisation and relevant public authority travel and health guidelines.

‘The decision is fully supported by stakeholders, including unions and commercial partners.’

Further details in relation to the rearrangement of the tournament will be communicated in due course.
