WP, City in stadium talks

WP Rugby will meet with the City of Cape Town from 11-13 February to discuss a possible move from Newlands to Cape Town Stadium in Green Point.

Mayoral committee member for tourism, events and marketing Grant Pascoe told the Cape Times that it would 'make the most logical sense for us' if WP became the anchor tenant of the underutilised stadium that was built for soccer's 2010 World Cup, but WPRFU president Thelo Wakefield said the stadium was still 'an unknown factor' for them.

According to Wakefield, 'any move to Cape Town Stadium would be a commercial decision, a business decision' and 'we need to know what it will cost us if we take over the role of anchor tenant or whatever, or hirer'.

Wakefield added that WP Rugby's commercial team had investigated what it would cost to renovate Newlands to be in line with regulations and manage it on a day-to-day basis, and would get access to the financial figures of the city, regarding Cape Town Stadium, at the meeting.
