Western Province president Thelo Wakefield has denied a report claiming that the union’s departure from Newlands to Cape Town Stadium is imminent.
Rapport newspaper said on Sunday that the almost bankrupt WRFU is set to sell the iconic stadium.
It added that negotiations between the WPRFU and the City of Cape Town about the union’s lease contract of the stadium are believed to be in the final stages and that the parties involved will make an official announcement later in the week.
However, Wakefield dismissed the article as mere speculation.
‘We have to talk to the clubs before anything can be stated as a matter of fact. I report to the [union’s] head council and will at all times respect that ruling,’ he told Netwerk24.
Louw Visagie, acting CEO of Cape Town Stadium, also said that no agreement had been reached between the city and the union.
‘If an agreement is signed with the WPRFU, it must first be approved by the Cape Town Metro Council. That approval has not yet been given so we can’t get ahead of ourselves.’
