A timeline for Frans Steyn’s recovery from knee surgery has not been set as the Springboks also await updates on the injury status of Sharks duo Eben Etzebeth and Jaden Hendrikse.
Steyn suffered a reoccurrence of a previous knee injury during a recent Currie Cup match against the Vodacom Bulls. The injury prompted him to undergo an arthroscopy, which prevented him from playing for the Cheetahs in the Challenge Cup playoff against Toulon.
According to Sunday newspaper Rapport, the veteran centre will consult with a doctor in the next week and only then will have a better idea of his recovery process.
However, there is real concern that the injury could derail Steyn’s drive to play in a fourth World Cup for the Springboks in France later this year and it might even prevent him from playing again.
Steyn won a second World Cup medal in 2019 and has 78 Test caps to his name, which makes him among the most experienced members of the squad.
Meanwhile, the Springboks will also be awaiting further news over the injuries suffered by Etzetbeth and Hendrikse, who both went off in the Champions Cup last-16 matchbetween the Sharks and Munster.
Hendrikse appeared to suffer an arm injury while in the process of scoring a try for the Sharks in the first half, while Etzebeth was replaced at half-time.
