Flyhalf Lubabalo Dobela scored 17 points as Griquas cruised to victory in Welkom to keep their Currie Cup playoff hopes alive.
The Griquas pivot dotted down once and knocked over six conversions in a match where the visitors produced four unanswered tries in a 20-minute purple patch that put them into a 28-14 half-time lead.
This despite an unlikely hat-trick of tries from prop Stephan de Jager who scored two in the first quarter to fly the Griffons into a 14-0 lead. Griquas responded with strikes from Johan Mulder, Jay-Cee Nel, Carl Els and Dobela, all converted by the flyhalf to double the hosts’ tally.
The second half was a facsimile of the first as De Jager completed his hat-trick only for Griquas to respond with three touchdowns from Els, Ashlon Davids and Sango Xamlashe to complete a 47-21 victory.
The result leaves Griquas on 28 points after 11 matches, three behind fourth-placed Western Province.
