Matches between lower-tier schools teams don’t make headlines, but there was an exception in the derby between Grey College and Paul Roos in Bloemfontein on Saturday when the U19G Grey flyhalf kicked a conversion for the visitors.
While all eyes were focused on the U19A match between the two rivals, which the hosts won to progress through their season unbeaten, there was an incredible moment in the build-up to the main game.
SCHOOLS: Grey unbeaten, Garsfontein into final
Paul Roos were leading 35-0 in the closing stages of the match between the U19G teams, when the visitors added another try to go 40-0 up.
As the Paul Roos kicker was preparing to slot the conversion, a stunning moment took place as the Grey College flyhalf offered to take the kick instead, encouraged by his teammates.
For a moment, the Paul Roos team was left stunned, but agreed to give the Grey flyhalf the kicking tee and he comfortably added another two points against his own team.
The successful conversion disolved the tension between the two teams, after things started to get a bit heated in the match.
To make the moment even more special, the Paul Roos team lifted the Grey flyhalf on their shoulders and celebrated with him as they carried him off the field.
