Springbok flyhalf Handre Pollard’s latest performance for the Leicester Tigers is a massive news story for SA rugby in 2023, according to MARK KEOHANE.
Pollard kicked 14 points on his first start for Leicester in the Champions Cup as the Tigers became the first team to reach the last 16 on Friday with a bonus-point win at Clermont.
He also crossed the whitewash on 30 December against the Sale Sharks in his maiden start in the English Premiership, as he made his long-awaited return from injury.
In his TimesLIVE column, Keohane praised the 28-year-old playmaker’s performance in France on Friday night, and suggested that it signals a return to form for the World Cup hero.
ICYMI – Pollard stars as Leicester progress to playoffs
“I know the year is only 15 days old, but every time Pollard plays a club match it is a big story, and when survives the combat it is an even bigger story. But the biggest is when there are signs of Pollard, the 2019 World Cup winner,” he writes.
“Pollard, at international level, has always been the preferred Bok starter at No 10. In 2022 he struggled for the first time, with inconsistent and uninspiring performances.
“When injury prematurely ended his international season, others were given the chance to play at No 10, among them Damian Willemse and Manie Libbok. Both DHL Stormers backs sizzled in the position and for some, Pollard’s name became an afterthought.

“[Against Clermont] Pollard kicked four conversions and two penalties and physically was strong in every challenge. It was such good news because Pollard’s international club career has been more about injury than inspiration.
“He moved to Montpellier post the 2019 World Cup and played in 25 percent of the club’s matches in his four-year stay.
“He arrived at Leicester injured from the Rugby Championship and when he did finally make his Premiership debut, he lasted just 20 minutes.
“Going to Clermont, a fit Pollard was a reminder to South African supporters of his class.”
