London Irish faces a critical deadline of 30 May to finalise its takeover deal or face potential suspension from the English Premiership next season.
The RFU has imposed the deadline, demanding either approval of the deal or evidence of the Brentford-based club’s financial capability to sustain operations through the 2023-24 campaign.
Notably, London Irish currently boasts SA-born players in their squad, including former DHL Stormers hooker Mike Willemse and utility back Benhard Janse van Rensburg, who previously represented the Cheetahs.
Owner Mick Crossan is currently engaged in extensive negotiations to sell the Exiles, with an American consortium leading the talks for acquiring the club.

While London Irish achieved their highest league finish in over a decade this season, securing fifth place in the Premiership, concerns have arisen off the field regarding the club’s financial stability.
Late payment of player wages in April has sparked worries reminiscent of the financial crises faced by Worcester Warriors and Wasps, who succumbed to administration last year.
However, director of rugby Declan Kidney expressed optimism, stating that the club has received “a lot of assurances” from potential new owners. Staff members remain hopeful that the impending buyout will result in a positive outcome for all parties involved.
The RFU’s decision to set the deadline was driven by the intention to prevent the club from entering insolvency during the season, which would have significant repercussions for players, staff, fans, and the rest of the league.
