‘SA Cup’ boost for small unions

Reports have emerged that a new 14-team provincial competition will be added to the South African rugby calendar from next year.

According a report in Netwerk24, the tournament dubbed the ‘SA Cup’ is set to run from September to November 2024 and will see all 14 unions in the Republic go head-to-head.

It is understood that the smaller unions will have the chance to take on the big guns, increasing opportunities for them to shine on the big stage.

Although the details are still in the draft stage, it is believed that the 14 unions will be divided into two groups of seven, with seeding possibly determined by teams’ finishing from the previous Currie Cup campaign.

While it is unclear whether the SA Cup will serve as a qualifying tournament for the Currie Cup, the concept is a welcome development for smaller unions such as the Pumas and Griquas.

With the potential for more lucrative sponsorship deals, such an event could help level the playing field and boost the game in South Africa.
