The Wallabies’ drive to make history in Pretoria has received a boost as Allan Alaalatoa is among the experienced props fit and firing to face the Springboks on Saturday.
Alaalatoa missed the Super Rugby semi-final between the Brumbies and Chiefs due to a calf injury, but the 29-year-old confirmed on Monday afternoon that he is ready to go for the Test at Loftus Versfeld.
The 63-Test tighthead said fellow props Taniela Tupou, who is returning from an Achilles injury, and Angus Bell (toe) have also been training well and are eager to face the formidable Springbok scrum.
“Those two have been unreal,” Alaalatoa said. “They’ve been running amok at training with their ball carries and you can tell they’ve had itchy feet to play.
“They’ve been involved in live scrums as well so they’ve been ticking all the boxes so far.”
Alaalatoa is among only eight players in the 34-man squad who were part of Australia’s last visit to South Africa in 2019.
A good chunk of the squad will be experiencing Pretoria for the first time, following South Africa’s split from Super Rugby in 2020.
The Wallabies have the chance to become the first Australian team to beat the Springboks at Fortress Loftus.
“It’s a great challenge. It’s something that we are all excited about,” said Alaalatoa. “Being part of the first team to beat South Africa in Pretoria, that would be awesome. It would be a memory we would remember forever.
“We’ve spoken about that, have that belief and what underlines that is making sure that we are doing everything necessary through our day-to-day.
“We are tracking really well, we’ve been together for four or so days so far, but the connection has been unreal between the players and coaching staff. It’s been awesome, so we are in a good state.”
