George Whitehead kicked 13 points as Griquas rallied to beat Western Province in a Currie Cup match at Griqua Park on Friday.
Griquas recovered from a 19-14 half-time deficit and a first-half yellow card to score five tries in a 38-29 comeback victory against their Western Cape rivals.
Province, boosted by several United Rugby Championship stalwarts, had a comfortable start to the match when Paul de Wet dotted down inbetween a double from Marcel Theunissen.
Griquas hit back just before the break, through centre Jay-Cee Nel, and took this momentum into the second half when Thabo Ndimande atoned for his first-half yellow card by setting up flyhalf Lubabalo Dobela for a try.
While Province kept themselves ahead through Willie Engelbrecht’s try, the final 15 minutes belonged to the home team as former Maties hooker Sean Swart steamed over, before replacement back Sango Xamlashe went on a sensational run to score. Whitehead added a final-minute penalty to seal the win.
The result sees Griquas sweep WP this season and consigns Province to a second successive loss and their sixth in a row against Griquas.
