Makazole Mapimpi takes on Damian Willemse in the second round of the quest to crown the best Bok try of the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
Mapimpi’s long-range try against Romania was too good for Willie le Roux’s finish against Tonga, besting his teammate by 20% to set up a clash with Willemse’s strike in the same match.
In a 76-0 thrashing of Romania, both Cobus Reinach and Mampimpi scored try hat-tricks, but the Bok winger’s second try was the most impressive of the lot, putting his searing pace on display and rounding Romania’s Gabriel Pop for the finish.
Earlier in the match, Willemse received a ball from Mapimpi just outside the Romania 22 and the flyhalf spotted a classic mismatch with prop Alexandru Gordas in his way.
Watch: Duane’s dogged Bok debut
Willemse produced an outrageous side-step to leave Gordas in his wake as he turned on the afterburners and scorched his way to the try line.
